Conscious, Sustainable Living in 2013

The holidays are coming to an end and we are creating our New Year’s goals, resolutions and aspirations for the coming year. How can we live a daily life that will contribute to a sustainable and eco-friendly world? Regardless of your actions during the past year, any day, every day, is a new day and an opportunity for change and growth. While there are many differences between each and every one of us, one great commonality is that we all inhabit the same planet and share the same natural resources. It is imperative that we collaborate to preserve and care for Mother Earth. Remember, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” (Native American Proverb)

One of the most intriguing aspects of being eco-conscious is that there is a huge spectrum of “green” and we can adapt our lifestyles to being more environmentally friendly based on our own resources and lifestyle choices. There are so many ways to “green” your life and it is the collective efforts across the globe that will contribute to a more sustainable Earth.

Here is a list of simple, affordable and sustainable lifestyle choices that can create exponentially beneficial results for Mother Earth…

1. Decrease phantom energy consumption by unplugging unused chargers and appliances.
2. Reuse scrap paper. Print on two sides, or let your kids color on the back side of used paper.
3. Turn off your computer completely at night.
4. Support your local economy and shop at your farmer’s market.
5. Turn off lights when you leave the room.
6. Buy an inexpensive reusable water bottle, and stop buying plastic disposable bottles.
7. Switch one appliance to an energy efficient model (look for the “energy star” label).
8. Switch all your light bulbs to CFLs (or at least switch a few).
9. Plant an herb, vegetable or fruit garden.
10. Don’t turn on lights at all for as long as you can—open your curtains and enjoy natural light.

I received my canvas in the mail the other day and...wow! First let me say that someone took great care in packaging my canvas for shipping. They wanted to guarantee that there was no chance on it getting damaged on it's way to me. It arrived quickly and ready to hang!



The picture I used for my canvas was not in the best focus and was actually taken on my old Blackberry phone. I love the picture because it really shows each of my boys personalities, it was just not the best quality photo. It turned out wonderful on the canvas! Looks even better on there than it did on my computer and I could not be more pleased with the outcome!

How to make a "Quiet Book" Project

After attending the amazing Wonder Mommy Busy Bag Exchange I was inspired to create a "quiet book" for my 17 month old as a holiday present! After many many hours of hard work its finally complete and I wanted to share it with all of you Wonder Mommies. Many of the templates were found online and were easy to follow (more info below). If you prefer not to make an entire book, making one page at a time would be a great project for you and your toddler to do together! Happy creating!

The cover has a full zipper to help keep any small pieces from getting lost and handles to help carry. The inside of the cover has a large pocket for extra small toys or even a pad of paper and crayons.

Becoming a New Mommy: Finding Your Inner Super-hero, Part II

The Journey Continues…

Pregnancy, a word that most women think and dream about, myself included. From the moment you get those test results, your body starts the process of transformation from just a regular person, to this superhero charged with the power to guard and protect this growing being inside of you. As I mentioned in “part 1,” the journey to becoming pregnant was filled with ups and downs, but surprisingly easier to accomplish than I originally anticipated. And although I had some “scares” with spotting and was told to take it easy during the first trimester, I operated as usual. However, nothing could have prepared me for what was waiting just ahead of the halfway mark…
For those who know me, they can attest that I am like the energizer bunny, always on the go, and always multi-tasking. And being pregnant was not going to limit me (or so I thought). I was lucky to have a pretty mild first trimester and the timing of it was perfect as I was off for the summer. The fall came, and I was back at work, teaching, and also planning a move into a home, gearing up for the Jewish holidays, and getting my ladybugs (step-daughters) back on the school routine. Since I worked far from my house, I chose doctors and a hospital to deliver at closer to work, as my plan was to work until it was time for the baby. 
“Moving week” was here and so was my 20-week ultra-sound at the perinatal specialist. We were so excited to see the baby, even though we had been four weeks prior to finish the integrated testing for chromosomal abnormalities (which were all normal results). My mom was joining us for her first peak at her first grandchild, and we all agreed we were not going to find out the baby’s gender. The technician began the appointment by doing an internal ultrasound. Being the “reader” mom that I am, I asked why she was doing this as I had read that after 12 weeks gestation internal scans were not normal. She replied with this is standard practice for this doctor, no matter where you are in the pregnancy he likes to measure/check the cervix. The scan finished and we were all elated seeing the baby and ready to see the doctor and get back to work. We were sent to the waiting room; which if you happen to know this doctor, is the place where pregnant women gather to talk and complain about the insane wait time. My mom left and my husband and I sat there for what felt like an eternity. Just as I was going to the nurse to find out how much longer we would be waiting (already at the two hour waiting mark), they called my name and we were taking back to a small office to wait, yet again, for the doctor. 
Finally, the doctor came in and sat down cheerful and very friendly. He put the images of the baby on the screen and showed us how everything was measuring great on the baby and it looked like all is normal with the baby. We were picking up our stuff and ready to go and he said to me, “so what do you do for a living?” I thought to myself, ah, small talk, I just need to get out of here. I replied, “I’m a teacher.” He followed up with, “do you walk around a lot? Do you sit on the floor with kids? Do you exercise?” I answered his questions and told him, “I’m like the energizer bunny, and I’m everywhere.” His tone changed, and he said (and I remember it word for word), “okay, you are going to go back into a room and I am going to do another internal scan myself. There will be one of two outcomes. The first, you will leave here and go straight to the hospital, check in, and I will be performing an emergency surgery to try to save the pregnancy, and then you will be on bedrest. The second outcome is that you will leave here and go home and be on bedrest for the rest of the pregnancy and we will monitor you closely.” I was in utter shock. As I sit here writing this now I actually feel the same anxiety filling my body that I did then. I started to cry, and said, “bedrest? What? Why? I can’t, I work, I have to work!” He explained that according to the initial scans I had at weeks 13 and 16 my cervix was measuring normal (4.3 cm in length). However, at 20 weeks, the cervix was at 1.8cm and on the verge of exposing the bag of water that surrounds the baby. I was in a complete panic. Surgery? What the hell happened to cause this? 
We went back into the room and he did the scan and found that the cervix measured less than 1 cm. He turned to me and said, “it’s off to the hospital for you. I will meet you there later today.” I could not believe it. I turned to my husband and said, “Now I want to know what we are having. I can’t even fathom surgery, possibly loosing the baby, and not knowing the gender.” We agreed it was time to learn and give us some hope and something to look forward to. We were facing at least 17 weeks of bed rest. The technician did another ultrasound on my belly and showed us we were having a boy! We were experiencing all kinds of emotions but knew how wonderful this would be for our family to be complete now that we were going to have boy. 
There was no time to waste and the doctor explained the procedure I would be having was called a cervical cerclage, or literally suturing the muscle together to keep it from shortening any more. He further told us that I would need to lay for at least five days in a position known as trendelenburg (your head is down and your legs are elevated) to help gravity pull the baby towards my chest instead of putting pressure on the cervix, especially since he was very low. I would be hooked up to a fetal heart rate monitor as well as the contraction monitor while in the hospital so they could make sure I did not have any contractions or go into labor as a result of the procedure. All of this was incredibly overwhelming, especially since this was my first pregnancy. When I asked what caused this he said the condition was called an “incompetent cervix.”
INCOMPETENT. BOOM-welcome to motherhood. You (or your cervix rather) are incompetent. Every mother (new or veteran) strives for child rearing perfection, and here I am, 20 weeks pregnant and already being told I’m incompetent (or at least that is what I heard). I survived the procedure thanks to a godsend of an anesthesiologist who massaged my face and used aromatherapy to help with nausea and to keep me calm (I was awake an only given a spinal block since it is the least harmful to the baby). My post-op experience in the hospital was dreadful (we will save all hospital experiences for another post), but after four days I was able to go home, well to my parents’ house.
Since we were amidst moving into a new house (literally the moving truck showed up the day I had the surgery) and the house had stairs no less, I set up shop at my parents’ house to stay out of the way. Welcome to tortureville, population-me. I am not one to sit and watch things happen around me, but here I found myself sidelined for the next 17 weeks until the cerclage could be removed at 37 weeks gestation.  I spent each day lying flat or on my side and could only sit up long enough to go to the bathroom or scarf down some food (which when you’re pregnant and have to lay down immediately following eating, you don’t really want to eat).  I enjoyed catching up on my favorite tv shows and playing around online, but after the first week, I was over it. I felt like I was watching everything around me move but I was at a standstill. 
The holidays came and went, and so did my “maternity leave.” I found myself feeling anxious over would my job be there when I was able to go back, how were we going to get through this? My husband, who is just the best thing that could have ever happened to me, was feeling just as helpless as I was. We shared all responsibilities and now, moving into a new house, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of all four of us was on his shoulders. Very thankfully, we have WONDERful family and friends who stepped in and helped. I had weekly doctor visits to make sure things stayed status quo and since I was not able to drive, my family stepped in and sat week after week (for hours) at each doctor appointment.  We were also truly blessed with the help and support of a dear family friend, who luckily for us is an incredibly childbirth educator. Since she lived next door to my parents, she would spoil me with visits to give massages, teach me breathing exercises, and get my husband and I ready for the big arrival. She gave us an in-home birthing class and after much discussion she also helped me figure out my options and created a birth plan. Lusia, thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for everything!
So how exactly did I get through this? I’m asked that all the time. My response is simple, I just kept telling myself, “I am a mother, and this is what mothers do for their children. They sacrifice, they protect, and they put their child(ren) first.” I was determined to hold my son in my arms no matter what. I turned to the virtual world; since it was the only connection I had during the day to the outside world. One of my favorite Bravo-lebrities, Rosie Pope, had posted something on facebook one day posing a question to her followers about pregnancy. I remember responding and saying “Rosie, help! I am on bed rest for the next five months and I am going crazy here all day, any advice?” Not expecting a response, I was shocked that within minutes she replied and told me about an organization called Sidelines. This organization is designed as support for women and their families who are dealing with high-risk pregnancies. I found forums and connections to hundreds of other women going through what I was. Other friends referred me to the forums on Babycenter. I read success stories daily and we all traded experiences and asked questions surrounding our anticipated day when we would get to “ditch the stich,” or have the cerclage removed. 
Time seriously flew by, and before we knew it, it was January 12 and I was sitting in the doctor’s office waiting for this (bed rest) to be over. After a torturous time in the waiting room, I was face to face with the doctor as he laughed about how even he couldn’t believe I was still pregnant at 37 weeks. I held my breath and after about two minutes and a few small cramps it was over. I was free, or my cervix was free to start getting ready for a hopefully impending labor.  So now it was game-time and I was ready to roll—literally! I had a “birthing ball,” or yoga ball, and did exercises multiple times a day, walked every day a couple of miles, and started to pack my bags in anticipation of my little man’s arrival. 
My “birth story” could be a whole post in and of itself, so let’s suffice it to say it was right on par with the rest of the pregnancy—difficult and nothing went as planned. Needless to say, on January 25, 2012, at 6:00pm I saw my son for the very first time. There truly is nothing like seeing your child, and although I deeply wish I could remember holding him for the first time, sadly I cannot as the pain medication I was on has taken that memory from me. One day I know I will share this experience with my son and hope that from it he learns to be as supportive and loving as his father was to me when it is his turn to become a father. 
Motherhood is challenging, and sharing my journey with all of you has given me the release I needed from the whole experience. We are so lucky to been able to bring this beautiful child into our lives and are thankful that he makes our family complete. Cervical incompetence (CI) is relatively rare and occurs in less than 2% of pregnancies in the United States. However, CI is one of the more common reasons for second trimester miscarriages. Since little literature exists on the cause of CI, it is hard to determine factors and reason. However, studies have shown that women who have had internal procedures (such as a D&C) in which the cervix needed to be dilated are at greater risk for CI during pregnancy as the manufactured dilation could weaken the muscle.

Foodie Friday: Toddler Snack Mix Recipe

Toddler Snack Mix

Cheerios
Plum Super Puffs (any flavor)
Ritz Bits Peanut Butter Crackers (could also use Cheese flavor)
Ella’s Kitchen Apple & Strawberry Nibbly Fingers (broken into small pieces)
Raisins
Plum Teensy Fruits (Peach or Berry)
Sunsweet Diced Dried Plums

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. You can make as much or as little as you’d like!


I love making snack mix--it's simple, quick, healthy, and easy! This recipe is meant to inspire you to create a snack mix that your child will love! For this particular snack mix recipe, I just went through the pantry and combined my daughter’s favorite snacks. Toddlers can be so unpredictable about what they may or may not want to snack on, so having a mix of choices is helpful. I like to make a big batch of snack mix and divide it up into snack size ziploc bags so they are ready for when I need them. It’s a huge timesaver during those crazy moments trying to get out of the door! I always keep one in my diaper bag, it definitely comes in handy on-the-go! It’s also great for serving at birthday parties, play dates, picnics, and beach days! 

*For older kids, have them help in differnet variations... pouring, counting, sorting, etc...

Foodie Friday: Whole Wheat Pizza Toast Recipe

Callie here with Foodie Friday! Here is a quick & simple lunch or dinner recipe for all my fellow Wonder Mommies! I love ideas like this because you can add your own new twist each time you make this for your little one, so they don’t get sick of it!

Whole Wheat Pizza Toast

Ingredients:
Whole Wheat Bread
Pizza Sauce
Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Toppings (I added grated zucchini today, some other suggestions include grated carrots, finely chopped broccoli or cauliflower, turkey pepperoni, etc.)

1. Spread Pizza Sauce on bread
2. Grate/zest zucchini over sauce
3. Sprinkle cheese over zucchini (hides the vegetables so your LOs don't see it)
4. Toast in toaster oven until cheese is melted
5. Use pizza cutter (my favorite time saving gadget) to make small bites (My little one prefers no crust)
6. Allow to cool before serving

Product Review: Baby Bee-haven, See 'n Store




I was so excited to be able to use my  See ‘n Store, the stroller organizer that is designed to not only keep my things organized but also to help entertain the baby in a crunch. You can attach your iPad or other tablet onto the stroller and it will stay put. There are also pockets for other items like your cell phone, bottle, keys, etc. I decided to take my See 'n Store to the airport with me while I traveled with my son for the first time. It definitely came in handy during our flight delay- a must have when traveling with kids. Although I don't want to rely on keeping my kid entertained with just an iPad during mall visits, walks in the park, grocery shopping or even dinner out. I do feel this is the perfect way to help your baby stay engaged while you're on the go, especially for active kids who hate being confined to the stroller.

“Becoming a New Mommy: Finding Your Inner Super-hero, Part 1”

I would like to thank Alexis for her WONDERful and emotionally real story of infertility. I too have a "story" of infertility, as I know so many others do too. I know her story will hit home with many of our readers and I encourage you to always have a positive mental attitude. To be able to put your story into words for others is a true gift. I've tried many times to put my experience of strength and hope into written words but have never been pleased with my wording. I still continue to hope, pray and believe for yet another miracle of life on this emotional journey of infertility. Thank you Alexis... for motivating me to one day share my story with others, in hopes to inspire and encourage our fans and help them find their inner SUPERHERO.  xo

​First and foremost I want to start by saying how incredibly lucky I feel to join Wonder Mommy on her quest to inspire, educate, and support women in their most important journey in life, motherhood! Becoming a mother can be one of the most rewarding, yet challenging jobs in the whole world; so what makes me (technically only eight months in) qualified to give advice to I am sure seasoned mothers? Honestly, nothing! There is no school I could take to prepare myself for all the changes, obstacles, challenges, and most importantly blessings that I have faced in the last year and half. However, I am just willing to share my learning experiences with you with the hope that someone will read them and say “I can relate,” “I totally understand,” or “I felt the same way.” Finding a community or a forum to collaborate has been one of the greatest supports I found so far on this journey, and I thank you in advanced for your patience, respect, and for reading!

​The tone of this post is going to be a little bit more serious and “heavy,” then you can expect from me in the future. The reason being I want to share my honest and real story of becoming a mother. Nothing will be sugar coated, so if you are still pregnant, just know that my experience was not typical, and do not be alarmed. I also must acknowledge that my inspiration for “getting personal” comes from following a true Wonder Mommy in her own right as she blogs how to live fashionably yet economically while opening up about her medical struggles and life as an average girl. Alyson, thank you for being such an inspiration to me, and women everywhere!

The Journey Begins…
​For many women, deciding they are “ready” to begin trying to get pregnant is filled with anxiety and questions: How long will it take? What can I do to prepare? What doctor should I go to? Is my body ready for it? These were just some of the questions running through my mind in March 2011, when my husband and I decided we were “ready.” The biggest question for me though was, “will I actually be able to get pregnant?” Five years prior I found out I had a benign tumor in my brain on my pituitary gland. The main function of this gland is regulating hormones throughout the body. Although the tumor was very small, my doctors were concerned that because of the location (and because I had other symptoms) there was a large chance that I would have infertility issues as the hormone needed to help with ovulation would not be released properly and therefore prohibit me from be able to get pregnant. I was determined, however, to give it a try when the time came and see if I could without exploring the surgery option get pregnant.

​Back to March 2011—I was ready for a LONG fight. I had an IUD removed and we were ready yet cautious as neither of us wanted to get too excited realizing we could be setting ourselves up for failure. This was the first “test” of super-hero like strength. I went into this part of my life thinking that I was lucky enough to be blessed with two beautiful stepdaughters so if it didn’t happen I would still get to help raise them. Magically, in April (almost exactly one month later to the date), I found myself feeling run down and just “off.” I remember it like yesterday, sitting on the couch with my husband after midnight and telling him, “I feel weird. Something is wrong, and I don’t know what it is.” Being the incredibly supportive husband that he is, he said, “have you taken a pregnancy test, maybe you’re pregnant?” I thought and said that it would be impossible, how could I be so lucky to get pregnant so quickly (after all, the doctors told me it was unlikely to happen)? He ran out after midnight, and bought a pregnancy test. I took the test, and I’m sure you know where I am going with this I was pregnant. But my gut told me something was not okay. I fell asleep quickly but woke up suddenly at 5am in pain. I looked down and realized I was covered in blood and knew I was experiencing what every woman fears, a miscarriage. I was rushed to the doctor and he confirmed I had in fact miscarried after being about three weeks pregnant. ​​

There was unfortunately, no explanation for why this happened. And being a very analytical person I started with all the questioning; “Was it something I ate?” “Did I do too much activity?” and the dreaded, “Is this going to keep happening?” We tried not to focus on the event too much, and only our parents knew what happened. The doctor recommended waiting one cycle and then thought it would be fine to try again. And so we did. But this time I went to the extreme like many do after something like this happens; I cut out all caffeine, I made sure to take prenatal vitamins daily, I stopped eating everything “they” say to avoid while pregnant because I wanted the best possible chance for a viable pregnancy. My maternal instincts were already kicked up into high gear. Yet, the only things I did not cut back on were exercise and working. I wanted to make sure my mind and body were occupied and not focused only on getting pregnant.

Exactly six weeks later, on May 28, I remember feeling incredibly nauseous all day and after some coaxing from my husband, I took a pregnancy test; and to my excitement, I was pregnant! We agreed that we were not telling anyone (except my parents) that I was pregnant until I was at least 12 weeks a long. We were super cautious, as I did experience some cramping/spotting the first few weeks. I was instructed to limit physical activity and should be resting whenever possible. I knew this journey was going to be the ride of a lifetime but I was prepared to fight for the WONDERful miracle I was carrying inside.

In my opinion, from the moment you become pregnant, you are a mother. You have to find a way to keep this minuet being safe and hope to make it full-term. You often have to sacrifice or make lifestyle changes to do what is “best” for the baby. But whether you got pregnant easily, or are still trying after many years, the road to motherhood requires you to channel your inner super hero to fight the ups and the downs. According to the American Congress of Obstetrics & Gynecology, a “spontaneous abortion,” or miscarriage occurs in 10-15% of pregnancies during the first or early second trimester. Foodie Friday: Cooking Classes

As moms, we are always looking for innovative, exciting, and educational experiences to share with our children. I strongly believe in creating a hands-on environment for your child where they can explore and “wonder” about food! The possibilities are endless when it comes to food. I look forward to shedding some light on ideas for you and your little ones in upcoming blogs! Think about it how much of our lives are centered around food! It is a major focus throughout our everyday lives and even holidays and special occasions! We eat at least 3 times a day, with occasional snacks/treats in between. I like to think there are no rules when it comes to what we cook/eat, you can get as creative as you want or keep it simple, while still enjoying every minute!

We had a blast on our recent 'Wonder Mommy & Me' Growing Cooks Field Trip Friday! We put on aprons that were just the right size and started out by decorating our very own chef hats. Identifying colors and scribbling to their hearts content was just one of the many highlights! Chef Frank provided a demonstration before we got started. We were his youngest group yet! We learned how to roll and shape pretzel dough! The little ones used hand/eye coordination, fine motor skills, and believe it or not, sat still for more than a few minutes! “Cooking” with Mommy makes the little ones feel ‘so big’ and ‘so cool’! After all, it has to be pretty empowering for them to get their hands dirty and accomplish such a fun task. They love to “copycat” what they see adults doing, so for them to get the chance to cook really is a big deal!

No matter what, they will always look adorable while giving it their best attempt and it makes for great photo opportunities! While the pretzels were baking, we decorated cupcakes! There was a choice of vanilla or chocolate cupcakes, various frosting colors, and various toppings. The mini spatulas are a perfect fit for their little hands to frost the cupcakes! My little one could not wait to take a bite of her hard work! Maybe if we let them decorate vegetables, they’ll be just as anxious?!? We’ll save that experiment for another blog! ;) 

Once the pretzels were done, we quickly brushed them with butter and had a choice of sprinkling salt or cinnamon sugar on top before we took a big bite! The pretzels were delicious! After many pictures were taken, the kids “explored” what Growing Cooks had for sale. They sell a lot of great cooking supplies for kids, especially in mini or safer versions of what adults use. Overall, everyone had a really good time! There were some moments of chaos, but that is never unusual with toddlers! This is the best time to expose them to these types of activities. Practice makes perfect! Ultimately, they will keep getting better and better at focusing and enjoying every step of the cooking process!
